YUI adalah penyanyi, penulis lagu, dan aktris Jepang kelahiran Fukuoka, 26 Maret 1987. Saat ini YUI di bawah perusahan rekaman Sony Music Records Japan.

Sejak kecil YUI hidup tanpa ayah dan tidak memiliki ingatan apapun tentang ayahnya. Ketika masih di SD, YUI bercita-cita menjadi penyanyi.

Yui memulai menulis lirik lagunya sendiri sewaktu di kelas 3 SMP. Yui sangat bercita-cita menjadi penyanyi, dan pergi ke mana-mana dengan selalu membawa gitarnya. Sewaktu SMA, ia sering menyaksikan pertunjukan grup musik bianco nero di jalanan, dan memutuskan untuk berhenti sekolah. Yui mulai belajar menyanyi, menulis lagu, dan memainkan gitar di kursus musik kota Fukuoka.

Sambil bersila di atas kasur, Yui memainkan gitarnya dan menulis lagu pertama yang diberi judul "Why me". Setelah itu, ia mulai menyanyi di pinggir jalan di kawasan Tenjin, Fukuoka sebagai atraksi pembuka bagi teman satu tempat kursus musik.

Pada Mei 2004, YUI mencoba keahlian bermusiknya dengan mengikuti audisi yang diadakan Sony Music Japan Records. Awalnya YUI merasa gugup, namun pada saat gilirannya tampil tiba, ia dan gitar kesayangannya berduet bersama menyanyikan tembang Why Me, It’s Happy Line dan disusul I Know. Padahal, tiap peserta hanya boleh menyanyikan 2 buah lagu saja. Namun, karena “kenakalan” YUI ini, YUI pun lolos menjadi juara dengan nilai sangat tinggi, sehinga berbagai perusahaan rekaman menjadi saling berebut untuk mengontraknya. Bersama gitarnya, YUI pun menjajali bakatnya didunia musik di Tokyo. Dan sebagai hadiah, YUI di kontrak oleh Sony untuk melahirkan beberapa album.

Ternyata, keputusan YUI untuk meninggalkan sekolah dan berpindah ke dunia musik, tidaklah sia – sia. Keberhasilannya ini berawal dari jauth – bangunnya YUI memperjuangkan hidupnya.

Lalu, YUI mencoba memasuki dunia akting. Taiyou no Uta, adalah film yang pernah dibintangi YUI. Selama proses syuting berlangsung, YUI mengaku kesulitan melakukan beberapa adegan. Kesulitan terbesar adalah saat YUI harus memerankan peran Kaoru Amane yang ceria karena berbanding jauh dengan YUI yang agak pendiam. Namun, YUI terlihat piawai memainkan perannya hari demi hari, sehingga melahirkan tembang berjudul Good-bye Day yang bercerita tentang hari – hari sebagai Kaoru Amane..

Tak heran, nama YUI semakin naik daun berkat adanya movie ini. Walau tak mengenali siapa ayah kandungnya, tak mematahkan semangat YUI untuk terus berkarya. Karena kebencian YUI terhadap sosok ayah kandungnya yang meninggalkan YUI sejak kecil, YUI pun memutuskan menolak menggunakan nama belakang keluarganya, Yoshioka.

Dengan segala usaha YUI agar bisa terkenal, ia pun memenangkan Piala Oricon Charts selama 2 minggu berturut – turut. Pada akhirnya, YUI terus berusaha memberi yang terbaik untuk para fans – fansnya diseluruh dunia.
